The image of the whistle that came from the Lord was accompanied by a whisper that stirred a sense of excitement...it’s go time. In this slowed down season, we’ve been given an unusual opportunity to prepare in a more intense way for the race in front of us. In Ecclesiastes 3, the Lord speaks of a time for everything...and the whistle, for me, suggests that we’ve been in a time of training. A time of preparation and of gaining strength and endurance as we ready ourselves for what lies ahead. One of the characteristics of a whistle is that it creates a “pure, or nearly pure, tone” and can carry sound much farther than our own voice. In a swim meet, once the whistle is sounded, the starter tells the swimmers to step up onto the blocks, indicating that the race is about to begin. It’s go time...the Lord has blown the whistle - a sound that is purer and louder than our own voice. And He is calling us out onto the blocks. Stretched, trained and ready for the race of our life, it’s the start of something new, the race He has set before us.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” - Hebrews 12:1-2
